Sitting at the same place she'd always sat, Penny waited for for the other Ares Campers. Chiron was going to make an announcement about her and Danny sometime during the meal, but for the mean time, people were coming in, and kids who looked so young were filing in, talking nineteen to the dozen, and just hesitating a moment when they saw her and Danny.
A few of the girls barely even noticed her, but then Danny had that effect on women of all ages. Of course, he was looking more uncomfortable than he'd ever admit. Bravado demanded he pretend he loved being the centre of attention, but he always found teenage girls intimidating.
Bless 'im.
Di Immortalis, they really were so young. Could they really be thirteen and fourteen? Some of the girls looked ten years old if they were a day! So small, and delicate, it was impossible to think of them battling monsters. But she knew she must have seemed just as young, just as frail, back in the day. She'd been skinny too, all bone and awkward angles.
The Ares campers came in together. It was the way of soldiers, she supposed, the way of the battlefield. Every code, every unspoken set of rules soldiers lived by involved caring for each other above all else.
She smiled the uncomfortable smile of someone feeling ridiculously out of place.
"I'm Penny," she introduced herself. It was odd, you looked at them, and it was just like looking at school mates. Odd to think this mixture of ethnicities made up a family of sorts. They were all her little brothers and sisters.
Lord her father was a man-whore!
She watched while people settled, and then Chiron came in and Mr D materialised with a bored expression and a hawaiin shirt that was just as out of fashion when she'd been here.
"As you know, we have a session of Capture the Flag starting tomorrow, you've all signed up, well done. Additionally, we have two old campers staying with us, Daniel Young," he pointed to Danny at the Hermes table, and he raised a hand in a sort of salute to everyone. "And Penthesilea Jones." She also raised a hand.
"Penny," she said, well aware that even among half bloods, it was a random name if you didn't know the story.
"They'll be helping out with capture the flag, and training, for the next few weeks at least. You might find it interesting to hear a few of their stories. Right!" He lifted his cup."We dedicate this meal to the gods!"
As she tossed the best of her meat and the very crispiest of her potatoes into the fire, she sent up a grateful greeting to her father, wherever he was.
"Good to be back, Da," she smiled, turned, and returned to the table. "So! Who's cabin leader?"
[zep, if you want to reply, i'd love it but if you don't no worries and *hugs* for being ill!]
